Commission finished! Viola Tricolors in Field

Finally got finished with this! It was so much fun to work with the commissioner to get the colors chosen and to get things to work out. Would definitely work with him again! <3

Commission Wip 2~ Lineart & Color!

Wild Pansies commission wip

Got some lovely critique on how to get the clouds to look this pretty. And was so very excited to get all of the grass to look so good! Getting color on this is going to be amazing, I can't wait!

And I also 'can't wait' and be patient to share where I am on painting yet. XD Tutor suggests that I add a few insects and stones--insects to show life in this area and stones/taller grasses to make the grass bits look like there's life in it. It could really fit!

Lyrea, then and now

Lyrea

It's been an age since I've drawn this character, so I love how the more humanoid version is coming out. Thank goodness for female-anatomy-for-artists.com for the pose too! (Not linking because it edges on the not so family friendly things since the photos are for artists.) There's at least a reference of some kind of clothes to put on her...

This is from all of 2006 or so, I think. XD Meet the total fanart that Lyrea once was!

It feels like it's been *ages* since I've seen this version. XD At least her purple jeans can be kept...I'm not so certain on what that blouse ever was. We'll have to see how it all works out come the finished linework of my current version! ...How did I forget her spatula on the stretching pose though!
I mean, in 2006, I was still trying to use GIMP. A very fine program but definitely more for making 3D work than just 2D stuff. How did I even do it? Goodness knows that I don't remember, but I bet that it's still great as a free program for people to play with.

Ashley commission is finished!

So very thrilled, fdnbgonds was happy about how the commission came out! That's such a relief, it was fun to do the work and everything but there's hardly anything better than knowing that someone likes what you did for them! Since I bothered to show the sketch and lineart on the last post, here's a link to the flat and full color versions:

Flats: http://art.rachburns.us/2017/07/ashley-flats.html

Full Color: http://art.rachburns.us/2017/08/ashley.html

(No real need to post the images here since they're on the art page, right? Have to give some little incentive to go over there...)

I've been sitting on this picture for a few days, just looking at it. My gosh, the days flew! We had a lot of fun deciding the pose and his references were very good for the colors.
Would definitely draw for him again!

The bar has been set!

I now know Tre's hair color, his skin color, his eye color...and it all works!

I wasn't aware that his 'dark brown hair' (as I've been imagining it) was actually dishwater brown/dirty blonde. It could be either at this point. It's always fun to imagine that the character hasn't "told" everything until he (or she) has "picked out their palettes. And it's always a fun surprise! Especially after being hung on something and not being able to put pen to the tablet.

Yeah. Funny too that it's often the palettes that keep me hanging. Oooh, had to fuss so much about them to be able to finally do this. The madness of the arts...
Let's see if I can keep making these work on the other parts of the image!

Edit:
Ahahaha! YES! You know that your drawing of a face looks right when Facebook is trying to make you tag the person you had in the "photo".

Grayscale + Paints =

Something that's a bit darker than how I normally paint. Take a look!

Someone in the chat I'm in has mentioned that I'm very low on the "color temperature" scale and linked to this, from TsaoShin. When I've recovered from my hand cramp, I'll work some more. But it's still pretty nice to have this right now.

Rework will come soonish but I'm just so happy with how it is right now!

Revisiting the Four

All Four Horsemen
At this link, you will probably notice that these four aren't properly shaded, as I'd previously assumed. These are actually the flats. I'm sorry about that, was too excited to have them "finished". What's wrong with me? XD

Here are the more shaded versions. And where I'm going to stop with them before I ruin everything.

"Get Off Me!"

Flakey Orange Stone texture by Max Boughen

Can't quite figure out anything else to do to this without making it look bad, so I guess it must be finished. Other than not getting to do more...I think I'm real happy with how this turned out. It's going to be somewhere around the line of fun to go around this process with my next pieces, too.

Looking forward to it!

Yes. Yes. and YES again!

Plenty still to work on with the current project but, due to a few good crits/comments, I've got a plan to go with. Mostly by using a painting term that I'm not really good with yet... Contrast. Learn how to make the colors in the image contrast with each other to help lead the eye to the main subjects. ...Seems like this is going to be the piece I have to take my training wheels off. *faint*

1. Turn the skeletonguy on the front and right darker, like a silhouette. Check.
1a. Turns out I'm pretty happy with him. Thank goodness!

2. Make Valeon's magic a bit brighter as the light focus of the piece. Check.
2a. Have them highlighted in accordance to the magic--probably need to take it another few
steps forward but I'm happy with it right now. Let's see if I find the other shadows needed!

Other ideas that don't have a set place are:
-Color that tree and make it fit into the picture
-Do something with that sky to make it not so flat
-Make the colors not so samey--they're around the same dullness all over

And here is the work in progress (edited 5-22-16):

All four horsemen!

Maj:  Vae:

Hyvar:  Len:

Oh my gosh, that's all four of them. THEY ARE ALL FINISHED. That took far too long, it shouldn't have, but this DID it.

Maj, by himself

Still no shading, but someone told me how to fix his busted up shoulder. So that is good. I'm excited to finally get him colored in. If I get my way, it'll color in similar to how Vae's did!

Edit April 12th
Right! Finally shaded in, yaaaaaay! ^_^ Two more left!

Base colors done!

I am so excited that all four of these boys have got their flat colors! @@ I'm in the home stretch!
Maj and Vae has their shading! 2 more to go!

Edited versions on the April 12th post

So.

Like a totally mature digital artist who has absolutely everything together in my mind (and speaking with no sarcasm whatsoever), I've decided that I'm going to cry if I save over my recent four linearts.
The answer to this dire problem is terribly simple, of course. But everyone's allowed to be ridiculously possessive --a little bit choosy over things here and again, right?

All four boys are slowly going to have their flats put in, probably the same order that I posted the first time.  The image at the link will be edited until he's fully colored in and this one will most likely be deleted for a future post.
